Stills from video Failed Borders: Living in the East
Failed Borders: Living in the East revolves around the recent history of Germany's reunification and the perpetual struggle of seeking new opportunities in a safer place. This universal need extends beyond Germany and highlights the rising nationalism in Europe.
With the help of the computer game 1378(km), the project is set in a non-place, an area that no longer exists - the inner border of East Germany. Through a first-person perspective it entangles fragments of different memories of people who lived in the GDR, reiterated by younger Germans, detaching thus the emotionality from the memory itself.
In the end, the project blurs the lines between the perpetrator and the victim, challenging the audience to reconsider the complexities of migration and borders.
