Failed Borders: The Case of Pylos Shipwreck is a project exploring the multifaceted dimensions of migration, racism, and the rise of far-right ideologies through the lens of the deadliest migrant shipwreck in recent history, near Pylos in Greece. This video-based work weaves together various mainstream media clips from the reporting of the shipwreck, testimonies from survivors, reflections on my personal and familial history as a migrant, and the broader socio-political context of growing xenophobia in Europe and beyond. The project aims to interrogate how "the other" is constructed, feared, and rejected, asking viewers to consider how their own position in history shapes their perspectives on belonging and exclusion.
